In-Kind Donations to the Urban Outreach Center

Hunger isn’t primarily a supply problem.

Hunger is a distribution problem.

The key to solving hunger is making sure food gets in the hands of the people who need it most. And not just any food — but fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy pantry staples, and culturally appropriate items.

We believe that food-insecure New Yorkers deserve healthy options in a dignified environment.

We share several tons of food every week with hungry New Yorkers.

Where does it all come from?

  • The New York City Food Assistance Collaborative. We are grateful for our partners at the Food Bank of New York City, City Harvest, United Way of NYC, and NYC HRA.

  • Local restaurants and grocery stores. We are glad to partner with local restaurants, grocery stores, and food-rescue groups to see that food does not go to waste.

  • Communities of Faith and Schools. In addition to donating money, many local religious organizations and schools run ongoing food drives to support our pantry.

  • Individuals, just like you, who feel inspired to help end the hunger gap in East Harlem and the Upper East Side.

Donation Guidelines

We’ll admit it — we’re picky about the donations we accept.

But that’s for a good reason: We want to send our guests home with nutritious food and basic resources that we’d be willing to use in our own families.

Food and Clothing Drives

Our preferred method of receiving donations of needed in-kind items is through our Amazon Wishlist.

We also accept food and clothing drives through YouGiveGoods.com.

We also accept limited, scheduled drop-offs of donations of used clothing, nonperishable foods, and hygiene products at 1745 1st Avenue.

Please contact Program Director Shaun Kennedy at Shaun@UOCNYC.org before bringing donations.

We would be glad to provide a tax donation form.

We welcome the following items—unopened and not expired:

  • Canned, boxed, and bagged non-perishables — low-sodium and low-sugar only.

  • Individually packaged, healthy snack foods.

  • Fresh produce that's not near expiration.

  • Travel-size personal care items, such as shampoo, toothpaste, and feminine hygiene products.

  • Cleaning supplies, especially laundry soap.

  • New socks, underwear, and coats.

  • Toys, new.

  • Sleeping bags

  • Money and grocery store gift cards.

Please note we do not accept furniture donations.
